113 Scholars Under the Equity Leaders Program (ELP) Join Top Global Universities

by Jacky Muraba

The Equity Group Foundation (EGF) is proud to announce that 113 exceptional scholars from the Equity Leaders Program (ELP) have been admitted to 71 leading global universities across 22 countries. These scholars, representing Kenya (82), Rwanda (21), Uganda (8), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (2), have earned scholarships collectively valued at Ksh. 2.8 billion (USD 21.5 million) for their undergraduate studies.

Dr. James Mwangi, the Executive Chairman of EGF, officiated the airlift ceremony, celebrating the scholars’ remarkable achievements. Each scholar will receive an airlift token of Ksh. 200,000 to support their transition to their respective institutions.

As part of EGF’s commitment to Education and Leadership Development, these scholars participated in a rigorous two-month College Counselling program. This program provided expert guidance on essay writing, university selection, and exam preparation. Additionally, a week-long bootcamp equipped them with essential skills to thrive as global scholars.

During the dedication and flag-off ceremony, Dr. Mwangi inspired the students to be change-makers, urging them to leverage their knowledge, values, and skills to address Africa’s developmental challenges. “As you embark on this journey, stay adaptable, embrace challenges with integrity, and let your unique qualities shine,” he encouraged. “Build strong networks, innovate, and contribute to your community as these will be your greatest assets.”

The scholars are set to join universities across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Dr. Mwangi emphasized their role in driving Africa’s socio-economic growth, particularly within the Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP), a private sector-driven initiative championed by Equity Group. “Your ideas and solutions can bolster Africa’s economic potential, expand markets, and accelerate technology adoption. Your contributions will be instrumental in creating a prosperous future for our continent,” he added.

He also stressed the importance of mentorship, encouraging scholars to give back by sharing their knowledge and experiences. “Understand that your true wealth lies in the positive impact you create. Your journey is about illuminating paths for others, inspiring them to create lasting change,” Dr. Mwangi said.

During the Airlift Ceremony, Garang Makech Kuol, an ELP Scholar heading to Bowdoin University in the USA to study Computer Science, reflected on his journey. “The support network at Equity was instrumental to my success. There were times when doubt crept in, but the unwavering belief of the people around me pushed me forward. The Equity team’s encouragement was like a steady hand guiding me through challenging moments and its incredible to think about how my life has transformed from the adversity of a refugee camp to securing my place at a world-class university. From the adversity of a refugee camp to securing a place at a world-class university, this journey would not have been possible without Equity’s unwavering belief in me.”

I realized that I had to make a change and contribute to vaccine development. This opportunity inspires me to do more for my country and community.”
