Kenya’s leading mobile operator Safaricom has announced a tariff reduction on its Lipa Na M-Pesa service. Dealers will as from the 3rd of April enjoy a 50 per cent reduction on transaction fees for all goods brought via Lipa Na M-Pesa.

Safaricom currently charges dealers a maximum of 1 per cent of the transaction amount on Lipa Na M-Pesa. This will be reduced to 0.5per cent. Under the new tariff, M-Pesa dealers will also be charged a flat fee of KSh200 for payments above KSh40000.

Safaricom also announced that dealers will be able to receive transactions of KSh200 and below at no cost. They will also enjoy instant processing of payments made through Lipa Na M-Pesa to their bank accounts. The company revealed that there were 23 participating banks already.

However, the mobile operator clarified that the changes will not affect Gaming merchant tariffs as well as the Lipa Na M-Pesa petrol station tariffs.

The reduction is likely to benefit small businesses such as Kiosks, small eateries, BodaBoda riders, PSV operators among others.
