In a landmark move to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the global travel industry, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched the Together in Travel SME initiative, with VFS Global joining as a Founding Partner.
As the only global body representing the private travel and tourism sector, WTTC comprises over 200 member companies that collectively account for approximately two-thirds of a trillion US dollars in annual turnover, roughly 30% of the entire industry.
Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in technological innovation and market expansion, VFS Global is uniquely positioned to contribute its expertise to this initiative. The programme aims to empower SMEs, enabling them to thrive within an increasingly dynamic travel ecosystem.
Operating in over 150 countries, VFS Global will actively support SMEs, recognising their crucial role in driving innovation, fostering cost-effective growth, and promoting sustainable development. Through this initiative, the company seeks to help these businesses scale operations and unlock new opportunities for long-term success.
“We are delighted to welcome VFS Global as a Founding Partner of Together in Travel,” said Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO. “Their expertise, global network, and industry leadership will play a critical role in shaping this platform, equipping SMEs with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities they need to succeed. By joining forces, we are building a more resilient and inclusive travel and tourism sector where businesses of all sizes can prosper.”
VFS Global also promotes inclusive economic development by supporting local enterprises, women-led businesses, and those representing indigenous communities—broadening its supply chain and impact.
“Since joining the WTTC Executive Committee in 2023, I’ve seen its groundbreaking efforts to open opportunities for members,” said Zubin Karkaria, Founder and CEO of VFS Global. “The Together in Travel initiative offers SMEs access to global markets, investment opportunities, training programmes, digital transformation tools, and sustainable business frameworks. As a Founding Partner, we are committed to leveraging our global presence to help SMEs grow and enhance their socio-economic impact.”
As part of the initiative, WTTC has also named Andrea Grisdale, Founder and CEO of IC Bellagio, as Vice Chair. With over 25 years of experience creating bespoke travel experiences, she will help steer the programme’s mission to foster inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability across the travel industry.
Matthew Upchurch, Vice Chair of WTTC and Chairman & CEO of Virtuoso, added: “Together in Travel is a transformative initiative supporting critical SMEs. By collaborating with our network of founding partners, we’re equipping these businesses with the resources they need to succeed in a complex and competitive marketplace.”
Grisdale echoed the initiative’s goals, stating, “I’m honoured to serve as Vice Chair. This programme is an important step in empowering SMEs with essential tools, resources, and support. Together, we are paving the way for long-term growth and a more sustainable future for global travel.”
