Uber has unveiled Uber Safari, a new product category that offers on-demand safari experiences in Nairobi National Park, further embedding the company into Kenya’s tourism ecosystem.
The launch coincides with Uber’s 10-year anniversary in the country, underscoring its role as both an innovation leader and economic enabler.
Positioned as a first-of-its-kind service, Uber Safari allows users to book either a Day Safari or Night Safari directly through the Uber app via Uber Reserve.
Riders are then picked up in safari-ready Land Cruisers operated by licensed tour companies, accompanied by a professional guide for a three-hour wildlife experience.
Nairobi National Park, famously the only national park situated within a capital city, provides the backdrop for this seamless connection between urban convenience and natural heritage.
The service has been developed in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Kenya Wildlife Service, the Tourism Regulatory Authority, and trusted fleet operators to ensure safety, sustainability, and authenticity.
“Tourism plays a vital role in Kenya’s economy, and with Uber Safari, we are excited to be unlocking new ways for people to connect with our incredible wildlife heritage,” said Imran Manji, Uber’s General Manager for East Africa. “This product is designed to make safaris more accessible and convenient for both local residents and international visitors, while driving new earning opportunities for drivers and communities that rely on tourism.”
Echoing this, Anabel Díaz, Uber’s Vice President for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said the initiative reflects Uber’s long-term commitment to local innovation. “Kenya is one of Uber’s most important markets in Africa, and Uber Safari embodies how technology and tradition can come together to strengthen tourism, support livelihoods, and create unforgettable experiences.”
Boosting Tourism and Local Partnerships
Uber Safari comes as tourism continues to be a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy, accounting for 10.4% of GDP and 5.5% of formal employment. In 2023, Uber’s operations generated KSh 14.1 billion for the economy, while its platform created KSh 2.7 billion in additional value for the tourism industry, supporting millions of tourist journeys.
Crucially, the new product is designed to complement Kenya’s existing tourism ecosystem by integrating local tour operators and fleet owners into the Uber platform. Safari Land Cruiser operators can soon list their vehicles on the app, gaining access to Uber’s rider base and seamless booking system.
This partnership-driven model, Uber said, ensures value flows back to local businesses while giving riders trusted, safe, and high-quality safari experiences.
