MT Elgon, a constituency bordering Uganda, is named after its second-highest mountain in Kenya, standing at an impressive elevation of 4,321 meters.

This majestic mountain is known for its massive volcanic base, diverse plant and animal life, cascading waterfalls, and rejuvenating hot springs. It attracts trekkers and mountain climbers from all over, offering an unforgettable experience in the heart of nature. The constituency has a population of about 300,000 and holds a massive potential that can greatly contribute to Kenya’s economy.

However, despite its abundant opportunities, both the leadership and entrepreneurs have failed to fully explore and capitalize on the extensive resources, leaving the populace living in poverty at a staggering rate of 28.8%. This makes Mt. Elgon the fourth poorest constituency out of nine in Bungoma County.

THE UNTAPPED POTENTIAL

(a) Strategic Border Crossing

MT Elgon is strategically located as a border point between Uganda and Kenya, with a one-day drive to South Sudan. However, the potential of this border point remains largely untapped. By investing in infrastructure and strategic planning, MT Elgon can become a vital hub for the movement of goods and services, creating employment opportunities and reducing poverty. With proper development, Mt. Elgon could easily become another dry port, facilitating the smooth movement of goods and services across East Africa.

(b) MT Elgon National Park Development

The region’s natural beauty, including the majestic Mt. Elgon and its diverse wildlife, presents a significant opportunity for tourism and economic growth. However, the lack of essential infrastructure, such as healthcare facilities, hospitality services, and camping sites, has hindered the development of this potential. The leadership has overlooked the opportunity to attract investors and partner with organizations to promote the region’s beauty, which could create numerous job opportunities and boost the local economy.

(c) Proximity to Lake Victoria

With President William’s focus on the blue economy and the potential of Lake Victoria, MT Elgon’s proximity to this key area presents an opportunity for economic growth. It could serve as an entry and exit point for the Nyanza to the western economical zone, extending to the North Rift and the eastern part of Kenya. However, the region is yet to fully capitalize on this potential, while other areas such as Busia and Malaba continue to thrive.

(d) Rich Agricultural Soil

The fertile soil of MT Elgon has historically been a key factor in its agricultural productivity. It has the potential to grow a variety of crops, including pyrethrum, coffee, tea, cocoa, and cotton. However, the lack of farmer-consumer protection policies has led to exploitation, smuggling, and a decline in agricultural productivity. The region’s agricultural output, including Irish potatoes, vegetables, onions, tomatoes, and maize, could significantly contribute to Bungoma County’s economy if properly managed and protected.

(e) Abundant Labor Force

With 68% of the constituency’s population consisting of young people and children, there is a significant pool of available labor. By investing in the region, businesses can benefit from a readily available workforce, minimizing the need for expensive hiring and focusing on efficient service delivery.

In conclusion, it is imperative that the leadership and entrepreneurs recognize and harness the immense potential that MT Elgon holds. Collaboration between the national government, county government, and various stakeholders is crucial to open this region to the global market, develop infrastructure, and promote proper investment. This will not only address poverty and unemployment but also ensure sustainable and equitable growth for the entire community.
