Uber Launches GigSister Initiative to Empower Women On Its Platform

Uber has launched a community empowerment initiative called GigSister for women drivers and delivery people on its platform.

The program, created by Women at Uber, aims to empower and connect a community of women earners through a range of initiatives, including mental health support, motivation and self-promotion, and self-defence training.

The initiative has already achieved success in Europe and the UK, and Uber is teaming up with partners such as Google and L’Oreal to extend the program to Nairobi. As part of the initiative, Uber and Google will host a series of #iamRemarkable training for women earners to equip them with leadership tools to position themselves for success in running their businesses.

The aim of the initiative is to bridge the gender gap in ICT in Africa and enable women to become more active users and influencers of the technological space.

Uber’s Head of Communications East and West Africa, Lorraine Onduru, stated that the company is proud to launch this initiative to help eliminate barriers for women in the gig economy.

Dorothy Ooko, Head of Communications and Public Affairs, Africa at Google, added that the #IAmRemarkable training is a step in the right direction to ensure that women are equally equipped with the information, support, and opportunities they need.
