Nairobi United forward Kevin Wangaya has been named the SportPesa Premier League Player of the Month for April after a string of decisive performances that helped propel his side through an unbeaten run.
The 20-year-old attacker earned the accolade following an impressive month in which he registered three goals and three assists in five matches, consistently delivering early breakthroughs that gave Nairobi United control in crucial fixtures.
Wangaya, a Kenya U20 international, opened the scoring against Mathare United, Posta Rangers and Mara Sugar, establishing himself as one of the league’s most influential young talents. His standout display came against Murang’a Seal, where he provided two assists as Nairobi United fought back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a dramatic 4-2 victory.
Speaking after receiving the award, Wangaya described the recognition as a major motivation in his career.
“I’m really honoured to win this award. Seeing Humphrey Aroko win it earlier in the season was a big motivation because it showed what’s possible. I’ve stayed focused, worked hard, and I’m happy to see it paying off,” he said.
The talented forward becomes the second youngest player to claim the monthly accolade after Kariobangi Sharks teenager Humphrey Aroko, who won the award in February.
Wangaya, who has featured for Kenya at various youth national team levels, also revealed his ambitions of representing Harambee Stars at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
“I just try to be ready from the first whistle. If we start strong, the whole team grows into the game. More importantly, we’re fighting for results, and every contribution counts,” he added.
The award race also featured strong competition from Daniel Ogembo of Police FC, who kept four clean sheets during the month, and Nairobi United teammate Michael Karamor, who scored five goals.
Nairobi United head coach Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor praised Wangaya’s rapid development, saying the forward has shown the mentality needed to compete at the highest level.
“We challenge our players to push their limits and aim for the highest level, and Wangaya is embracing that. He’s been decisive for us, growing in confidence, and this is just the beginning if he stays consistent and hungry,” said Oduor.
As part of the recognition, Wangaya received a customised trophy and a cash prize of KES 50,000.
Nairobi United will now shift attention to a highly anticipated league clash against Kariobangi Sharks this weekend, setting up an exciting battle between Wangaya and fellow rising star Aroko.
