Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) has announced a landmark partnership with Meta, bringing a second high-capacity submarine cable to Kenya.

Through its subsidiary, Edge Network Services Limited, Meta has selected Safaricom as the landing partner for a new undersea cable connecting Oman and Kenya, a move poised to significantly enhance East Africa’s digital infrastructure.

Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration. “This deal is a significant strategic milestone for us at Safaricom as we mark 25 years and signals our readiness to transition into a fully-fledged tech company in line with our vision 2030 strategy,” said Dr. Ndegwa.

He emphasized that the partnership will enable Safaricom to “meet the surging demand for high-capacity, low-latency connectivity which is critical for powering economic growth, cloud adoption, and digital innovation.”

This strategic alliance underscores Safaricom’s commitment to delivering faster, more resilient, and future-proof connectivity, aligning with its vision to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030.

The new cable system is expected to place Safaricom at the forefront of digital transformation, providing businesses, communities, and consumers with the essential bandwidth needed to thrive in an increasingly connected world.

The Under-Sea Cable System will be fully funded by Edge. Locally licensed operators in both Kenya and Oman will be contracted to manage the cable segment within their respective territorial waters, as well as all associated in-country infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration and operation.
