Over 320 golfers from various clubs across Kenya are set to gather at the Ruiru Sports Club this Saturday for the much-anticipated annual Legendary Golf Tournament. The tournament, hosted at the par-73 Ruiru Golf Course, promises a day of competitive action and entertainment, with renowned golfers such as Stephen Lokonyo, Sophie Mbochi, James Ngambi, and Kibera Maina expected to headline the event.

The Legendary Golfers group, a collection of professionals united by their love for golf, will compete for top prizes at the tournament, which kicks off at 6:40 am with the first tee. A second round of action will follow in the afternoon from 10:50 am to 1:30 pm, sponsored by corporate entities like First Assurance, Floor Knight, Gelian Hotel Machakos, Ngambi Fresh, and Kwetu Real Estate.

Speaking ahead of the event, Ruiru Club Captain JK Muraguri expressed excitement about hosting some of the top names in the sport. “We are delighted to host the Legendary Golf Day at Ruiru this weekend. Our course is in great condition, and the greens provide an ideal environment for competition. Thanks to our partners, we are offering attractive prizes for the winners,” said Muraguri.

Notable players to watch include Rhodah Mukami, who was recently crowned the overall winner of the IPF Golf Tournament at Ruiru with an impressive 41 Stableford points. Also expected to make a mark are single-handicap golfers Bernard Omondi, Joe Muendo, and Beatrice Waweru.

Mukami, confident following her recent victory, is eager to continue her winning streak. “I’m excited to build on my recent success and compete against the best in the country. It’s going to be tough, but I’m ready,” she said.

The event will conclude with live band performances in the evening, rounding off what promises to be a fun-filled day of golf and entertainment at the Ruiru Sports Club, which has hosted several major events this year.

Handicap 16 golfer Samuel Nguguna carded 43 stableford points to win the centenary golf day at the Ruiru Sports Club this past weekend as the club marked 100 years of existence.

Peter Mwaura who plays off handicap 13 was crowned the division one men winner after returning an excellent score of 41 stableford points at the tournament that was graced by 232 golfers from Nairobi and its environs.

“I am elated to be named the overall winner of this tournament at a time we are celebrating 100 years of existence and progressive excellence. I thank my four-ball for an amazing outing on the course and I cannot wait to brave the fairways in the competitions to come,” Samuel Njuguna said.

In the division two category, Amos Mwaura who plays off handicap 25 returned 43 points to cruise to victory beating Philip Nguyai, handicap 28, who carded 42 points to emerge second.

Handicap 13 Lucy Njuguna clinched the division one lady winner award after returning 41 points to beat her closest challenger Grace Miano, handicap 17, who carded 40 stableford points to be named second in the highly contested category.

Vincent Musalia, handicap 39 returned 47 stableford points to win the guest winner award and was closely followed by handicap 35 Milkah Macharia who carded 42 stableford points to finish second.

While Eliakim Maina claimed the longest driver award in the men’s category, Beatrice Waweru clinched it in the ladies’ category after her excellent ball-striking technique. Lucy Njuguna won the nearest to the pin in the ladies’ category while Dr. Fred Mugambi scooped it in the men’s category.

The club also hosted a series of other activities to mark the continental milestone- bowling, swimming, and pool table that culminated in a blue-themed dinner event with color and pomp.

As anticipation mounts for the upcoming Safari Sevens Rugby tournament this weekend, all eyes are fixed on the reigning African Rugby Champions Shujaa and Lionesses

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Board on Thursday announced the completion of all arrangements for an exhilarating three-day rugby extravaganza, scheduled to take place from Friday through to Sunday.

KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai expressed his confidence about the tournament stating that they have dedicated extensive efforts to ensure that the Safari Sevens remains a pivotal event in the rugby calendar.

“While it may not match the grandeur of the 2013 tournament, its significance in upholding the event’s legacy is unquestionable.”

The tournament is set to unfold at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA) grounds along Ngong Road, Nairobi, from November 17th to 19th, following a hiatus last year.

Highlighting the tournament’s influence, Mutai emphasized that the Safari Sevens plays a critical role in the development of rugby in Kenya, showcasing both local and international talent.

“This year is particularly significant as it marks the beginning of Shujaa’s journey back to the World Series and follows their qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.”

He further noted that as a pivotal preparatory event for the Paris 2024 Olympics, the tournament provides an invaluable platform for teams like Shujaa and the Lionesses to refine their skills for the international stage.

The men’s teams participating include Shujaa, Morans, KCB (National 7s circuit champions), Uganda, Samurai, Germany, Red Wailers, Tropic 7s, Western Province, and SA All Stars. The women’s category features Kenya’s Lionesses 1&2, Uganda, Tuks Women, and Tropic 7s.

The participation of these teams, particularly the African squads and international powerhouses, is crucial, offering a unique opportunity to challenge the African champions on their home ground.

This year’s event has garnered significant corporate support, with sponsors including the Ministry of Sports through Talanta Hela, Tusker, Faiba, Coca Cola, Samsung, and Rexona, among others.

Kenya Rugby Union Commercial Director, Harriet Okach, emphasized the renewed commitment to integrity, stating, “The recent efforts to rebuild trust with our corporate partners have been a cornerstone of our strategy. We are dedicated to upholding strong governance, aiming to restore the prestige of Kenyan rugby.”

“The return of Safari Sevens is a landmark event for Kenyan rugby. It presents an exceptional opportunity for the sport to expand its reach both locally and internationally,” She concluded.

Eliud Kipchoge, the world record-holder and two-time Olympic champion, once again proved his status as the greatest marathoner of all time by winning the 49th edition of the Berlin Marathon on Sunday.

Kipchoge successfully defended his title, completing the race in an impressive time of 2 hours, 02 minutes, and 41 seconds.

In a remarkable marathon debut, Vincent Kipkemboi, also from Kenya, finished second, showcasing his immense talent in the sport. Tadese Takele from Ethiopia, making his first appearance in the race, secured the third spot.

In the women’s race, Ethiopian athlete Tigist Assefa broke the women’s marathon world record, crossing the finish line in a remarkable time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds.

This victory allowed Assefa to retain her Berlin Marathon title. Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui finished in second place, demonstrating her exceptional performance.

It is worth mentioning that the previous women’s marathon world record of 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 04 seconds was set by Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei in the 2019 Chicago Marathon.

Standard Chartered is aiming to achieve World Athletics Label status in this year’s Nairobi Marathon, which would bring global recognition if any race records are broken.

The 20th edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon will be held on October 29 and is expected to attract over 25,000 local and international athletes.

One of the key changes implemented this year is a modification of the route, with the goal of aligning the race with globally recognized standards. This includes adjusting start times, certifying distances, and improving timekeeping measures.

“We already have over 5,000 registrations for this year, and obtaining World Athletics Label rating would be beneficial as it would attract elite international athletes to the marathon and enhance its competitiveness,” said George Kariuki, a representative from the Nairobi Standard Chartered Marathon Marshall.

The marathon will take place at the Southern Bypass, with the Uhuru Gardens serving as the venue.

According to David Lawrence, Associate Principal Marketing at Standard Chartered Bank, the marathon day will feature seven race categories: the 42-kilometre men’s and women’s races, men’s and women’s half marathon, men’s and women’s wheelchair half marathon, 10-kilometre races, a 10-kilometre CEO’s Challenge, a five-kilometre Family Fun Run, and the Corporate Relay Challenge.

To ensure fairness, chip technology will be used to detect cheaters, streamline registration, and enable athletes to track their performance in the competition.

David Lawrence also mentioned that the race supports the bank’s sustainability agenda and raises funds for the Futuremakers program, a community initiative aimed at addressing inequality and promoting economic inclusion for young people in local communities.
