Kenyan filmmaker Likarion Wainaina is breaking new ground with “Subterranea,” a groundbreaking sci-fi series that delves into the depths of human psychology.

This Showmax Original follows a group of eight individuals trapped in an underground bunker, forced to confront their darkest selves and the challenges of coexisting in a confined space.

In this behind-the-scenes look, Likarion shares the journey of bringing “Subterranea” to life, from the initial pitch to overcoming challenges, including how he secured the project by pitching it to Showmax without the show creator, Brian Munene, knowing.

When asked how it feels to direct Kenya’s first sci-fi series, Likarion admits that the excitement is tempered by pressure.

It’s a mix of adrenaline—anticipation and anxiety. Everyone is curious about our approach, and I’m eager to see how the audience responds.

Pitching the Concept

Likarion recalls the moment Brian shared an incomplete treatment of “Subterranea” in their production team’s WhatsApp group.

Initially skeptical, Likarion verified the original idea with a business partner before taking a bold step. “I pitched the idea to Showmax myself because the concept was too good to let slip away,” he says.

One of the biggest challenges was convincing Showmax that a sci-fi series could resonate with Kenyan viewers. “We had to demonstrate that relatable characters and believable stories could be created within our cultural context,” he explains.

Finding the right set also proved difficult. After a lengthy search for the perfect location, they secured a studio at M-Net but faced spatial limitations.

“We only had 7,500 square feet when we needed more. Fortunately, Brian suggested building two floors, which turned out to be a great solution,” Likarion shares.

With “Subterranea” now streaming on Showmax, Likarion sees this project as a launching pad for future experimental storytelling in Kenya.

I’m passionate about exploring genres like horror, thrillers, and action that aren’t common in Kenyan TV. I want to help lead this change.

“Subterranea” showcases Likarion’s creative vision signalling a shift in the Kenyan film industry. As he and his team navigate uncharted territory, they invite audiences to experience this thrilling new narrative .
