Nairobi Recognized as East Africa’s Deep Tech Capital by Global Index
As global competition intensifies, leading deep tech nations are poised to shape the future’s advanced and export-driven job markets. This year’s Deep Tech Index shows that Nairobi is the deep tech leader in East Africa.
The Deep Tech Index, conducted annually by the European Centre for Entrepreneurship and Policy Reform (ECEPR) with the support of Nordic Capital, maps and evaluates the global deep tech landscape.
North America, Europe and Asia dominate global deep tech, but it is also relevant to point out that important deep tech centres also exists in places such as Africa.
“Nairobi stands out as the deep tech centres of East Africa,” says Nima Sanandaji, CEO of ECEPR.
Growing populations in Africa lead to much development of companies dealing with managing the environmental impact of large population concentrations.
The strength in clean energy is also important, in relation to the strong growth potential in East Africa. A strong link exists between energy supply and prosperity. It is therefore relevant to stay ahead of energy technology in order to boost long term prosperity growth.
Developing with technology is not only a matter of climbing the technological ladder, increasing national security capabilities and boosting prosperity – it is also related to jobs. Youth unemployment tends to be lower in countries that have many world leading deep tech companies per million adults.
The report demonstrates that countries with a high density of deep tech firms typically enjoy robust property rights, low capital gains taxes, strong educational outcomes in PISA tests, and prestigious universities specialising in mathematics and engineering disciplines.
“High-quality education that develops technical skills is vital for future competitiveness. Leading countries boast top-tier schools in these fields. Through targeted educational investments and favourable tax policies, nations can enhance their standing in this sector and attract both domestic and international talent,” says Klas Tikkanen, COO of Nordic Capital Advisors.
This year’s report highlights a link between the number of deep tech firms and a country’s unemployment rate. For each leading company per million adults, unemployment drops by an average of 0.46 percentage points. These companies, often at the higher end of the value chain, generate substantial export revenues and advanced employment opportunities.
The impact is even more pronounced for youth unemployment, which decreases by 0.78 percentage points for each leading company per million adults. Boosting deep tech growth tends to create better opportunities on the labour market, is the finding.

Kenya, with its history of innovation in mobile money, continues to lead. But digital access is no longer the end goal. It is the starting point. More people are redefining success on their terms, building careers and communities using mobile-first tools.
The internet has changed how information flows and who influences it. Creators in Kenya no longer wait for permission from traditional media houses. A video recorded in Kisumu City can go viral across the country within hours of going online. A coding lesson shared from Nairobi can reach learners in Mombasa in seconds. This decentralization of reach has shifted how influence and opportunity are distributed. Visibility is no longer confined to urban centers or elite networks.
A 2024 Dalberg report found that digital creators in Sub-Saharan Africa generated $2 billion in revenue and supported over 20 million jobs in 2023. While modest globally, this is a critical signal for Kenya. Most of these creators are under 35 and operating outside the formal employment system.
They are creating value in real time and not waiting for employment. Their needs go beyond data bundles or ring lights. They need policy that protects their work, systems that support their scale, and capital that understands digital economics.
To compete at a global level, Kenya must do more than adopt digital tools. We must shape how technology is applied in our context. In music, small-town producers are uploading tracks that reach international audiences overnight. In commerce, entrepreneurs are running businesses from their phones, using cloud accounting and mobile payments.
In education, students are enrolling in coding bootcamps and virtual mentorships hosted from outside Africa. These are local innovations with global relevance.
As more Kenyans move online, access to mobile technology remains key. But it is also about affordability. Mobile financing companies have made it possible for millions to acquire smartphones through asset financing. This has not only improved communication; it has opened the door to income-generating opportunities. Whether it’s selling products on social media or offering services on gig platforms, more Kenyans now have a direct line to the digital economy. When tools are within reach, ambition follows quickly.
Even device manufacturers have a role to play in preparing for a digital-first future. It’s no longer just about affordability but about building smartphones that are ready for how people learn, work, and express themselves. Based on a survey of over 900 CISOs and IT leaders, the report exposes systemic weaknesses such as alert fatigue, fragmented security tools, slow threat detection, and widespread inability to detect lateral movement or defend against AI-driven attacks, leaving organizations dangerously exposed.
