Samsung Eyes Greater Market Share With The Launch of New Foldable Devic

With this in mind, Samsung Electronics will be unpacking the latest range of foldable devices on 10^th August 2022. Samsung’s global event is set to announce the most radical technological innovation in the smartphone space as the company gears up for an even larger share of the smartphone market pie.

The announcement was made by Samsung Electronics President Mr. T.M. Roh during the latest unpacked event.

“Last year, we saw almost 10 million foldable smartphones shipped worldwide. That’s an industry increase of more than 300% from 2020, and I predict this fast-paced growth will continue. We are reaching the moment where these foldable devices are becoming widespread and staking a bigger claim in the overall smartphone market. More importantly, Samsung Galaxy foldables have changed the way we use mobile devices and helped enable better lifestyles for users worldwide” said Mr. Roh during his address.

In Kenya, 96% of internet users use their smartphones to access the internet. With the shift to flexible working induced by the Covid-19 pandemic the smartphone has become a necessity for most Kenyans and is now a work and play gadget hence creating the need for the Samsung Foldable devices that make it easier to multitask.

“This year, we’ve made advancements in every detail and opened the new experiences enabled by these behavior-shifting devices. I am excited to see people discover new ways to do more of the things they love with the new foldable. The new foldables are both expected to look a lot like their predecessors. They’re also likely to be powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Samsung is also expected to improve the appearance of the crease on the folding display this year, and will also keep support for the S-Pen intact now that the Note series has officially been discontinued.

Samsung Electronics has for the last 10 years dedicated resources to create transformative technology by looking at the one thing all smartphones were synonymous with, a flat rectangular display. The big question being: How can one device have it all — a bigger screen and better portability? Samsung saw this as an opportunity not only to design a new shape but also to create new experiences that had never been possible with a smartphone before. Overcoming many technological hurdles, and successfully introducing the first-ever Galaxy foldable smartphone in 2019, this has changed the future of the smartphone industry ever since, and Samsung doesn’t seem to be looking back.

Over 40 KCAA students graduate in Drone Aircraft pilot

Drone Space, Kenya’s most experienced unmanned aircraft systems training organisation, has today graduated over 40 students during the inaugural drone pilots graduation in East and Central Africa.

The pilots received their Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) approved Remote Pilots Licence (RPL) certificates enabling them to operate drones in the Kenyan national airspace.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony Ministry of Information, Communications, and Technology Chief Administrative Officer Maureen Mbaka said that the unmanned aircraft industry is leading the way into a new age of aviation.

“As the drone industry continues to grow and develop at a rapid rate, it is crucial that pilots and operators do the same in order to improve their own standing within the industry,” Ms. Mbaka said. “Drone technology will continue to play an increasing role in optimizing various sectors including agriculture, housing, security, tourism amongst other key sectors of our economy, but first we must master how to fly and operate them right.”

Drone Space aims to build a team of KCAA–certified drone pilots who will practice flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to meet the local demands for various sectors of the economy.

“The age of unmanned aircraft has arrived. Today’s graduation is a first in the country, but a big leap in our national efforts to harness the use of this new technology. At Drone Space, we are committed to help shape this nascent industry, our graduates are very well trained, motivated and would make ideal drone pilots.”

“Drones provide opportunities not just for service delivery but also employment. It’s important that we do not miss this wave of frontier technology,” said UNDP Resident representative Kenya Walid Badawi.

KCAA requires commercial drone owners to be certified and registered before operating them.

“Safety remains a fundamental concern to our collective mission. For us to reach the full potential this industry has to offer, we must make safety a thing,” Said KCAA UAS Technical Officer Frank Kigen

During the event, the company revealed that it will be launching a Women in Drones Technology (WIDT) programmes a drone and data analysis program that targets graduate beneficiaries from all the East African member states, Ethiopia and Malawi

will see the Academy sponsor 12 women in Technology for the Drone and Data analysis program.

“We are on a journey to introduce the Women in Drones Technology Programme. We have developed the curriculum and are currently looking for partners to establish the program. We target to start it before the end of the year,” Tony Mwangi said.

Upon graduation, the beneficiaries will receive a Remote Pilot License and Certificate of Drone Technology (CDT) effectively enabling them to construct and assemble drones, aircraft fundamentals, operations, regulations, and data analytics for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). These are rare skills across the continent and will open myriads of opportunities for them.

Safaricom retrains 60 staff to bridge talent shortage in Digital technologies

Safaricom has unveiled a program that will empower and train employees who are looking to shift to new digital careers. Known as The Digital Academy, the initiative especially caters to employees working in technology careers that are becoming automated as computers gain more capabilities and take on more roles.

In the first phase that began early this year, Safaricom has already fully trained 60 of its staff and placed them in new roles. An industry first, the initiative is also helping the company bridge a shortage of talent as it seeks to bridge a customer shift to increasingly digital lifestyles. This digital transformation has been behind the growth of demand for data scientists, data analysts, and new-age programming experts amongst other roles.

“Safaricom operates in a fast paced environment where technology is ever changing. Recent advances have automated sections of our network meaning that certain careers will soon no longer be necessary. At the same time, these changes are driving demand for new skills where there is a shortage of talent in the market. The Digital Academy is a human resource innovation that has enabled us to both empower our staff with new skills and to have the right mix of talent based on our customer needs,” said Michael Joseph, CEO, Safaricom.

The Digital Academy offered a six month full-time course in five programs including Technology Automation, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Data Science, Emerging Network Technologies and Mobile Application Development. The first three months of the course were
classroom-based with the last three months seeing the employees practically applying their new skills in developing new workplace innovations.

Among the tools that the employees have developed during the training is a Data Revenue Analysis and Prediction Tool, and a Home Fibre Customer Satisfaction Analysis Solution.

All 60 employees remained under employment for the duration of the program with Safaricom also fully footing the costs of the training. Following the success of the first phase of the program, the company plans to partner with both local and global players to roll out the
Digital Academy to more of its staff in coming months. Besides the academy, Safaricom has also deployed a digital learning platform that will provide on-the-job training in more than 10,000 courses to its entire staff.

HP partners with region’s officials to curb counterfeits

HP Anti-Counterfeit and fraud experts, in partnership with local African authorities have conducted two successful operations to stop the trade of counterfeit cartridges for HP printers across Uganda and Mozambique.

The team of experts, in September and October last year raised several premises in the Maputo (Mozambique) and Kampala (Uganda) areas, seizing some 33,000 illicit items.

Ugandan authorities on January this year also dismantled a criminal ring that had distributed counterfeit cartridges for HP printers for sale in several East African countries.

Officials raided a distribution warehouse in the Kampala area that served as a manufacturing site for counterfeits. The operation has until now resulted in the seizure of 77,000 illicit items, bringing the total number of contraband products seized through recent activity to over 110,000 items.

“HP is proud of our continued partnership with local authorities in bringing counterfeiters to justice in Africa, and we commend the swift action of the local officials,” said Tiago Drummond Borges, Vice-President Supplies Sales, Europe, Middle East & Africa, and HP.

“This string of successful seizures is a true testament to the effectiveness of our Anti-Counterfeiting and Fraud programme. Our work helps in apprehending and prosecuting counterfeiters who break the law.”

Across EMEA over the last five years, approximately 12 million counterfeits and components have been seized by local authorities, supported by HP. HP has conducted over 4,500 audits and inspections (CPPAs and CDIs) of partners’ stocks or suspicious deliveries for customers.

Through HP’s Anti-Counterfeiting Fraud (ACF) Programme, the company actively educates its customers and partners to be vigilant against fake accessories and supplies. It also cooperates closely with local and global law enforcement authorities to detect and dismantle illegal operations that produce counterfeit HP components.

Nokia introduces five new devices

HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, has announced five new additions to its portfolio of Android smartphones – Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, new Nokia 6 and Nokia 1.

These new devices comes after the phone company, according to analyst firm Counterpoint, sold total of 16.3 million phones between July and September of 2017. From this figure, 2.8 million were smartphone sales and 13.5 million were feature phone sales.

The five new devices, according to the phone maker, promises a pure, smart, secure and up-to-date Android experience.

The Global phone maker also announced it is set to become the first global partner to have a full suite of devices selected into the Android One programme by Google, seeking to deliver a pure, secure and up-to-date Android experience has ensured Nokia smartphones were a natural fit for the global programme.

In a statement, the Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer of HMD Global Pekka Rantala said that smartphones are an everyday partner and something people need to know they can rely on.
