CGIL Urges Mass Participation in Upcoming June Referendums on Labor and Social Rights

by Brian Yatich

With the June 8–9 referendums approaching, the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL) has intensified its campaign, calling on all citizens to exercise their right to vote.

The referendums will present voters with five critical questions focusing on labor rights, justice, and social equality, making this consultation a pivotal moment for the country’s future.

CGIL General Secretary Maurizio Landini emphasized the significance of participation, stating, “Not voting is a serious political mistake.

Voting means freedom and responsibility. With this campaign, we aim to empower people to shape their own lives and reopen a chapter where everyone’s rights are central to the political agenda.

Those advocating for abstention are not just mistaken—they are denying the possibility of necessary change. Democracy thrives only when people participate.”

CGIL’s campaign is supported by a broad coalition of associations, political parties, artists, academics, and civil society leaders, united to combat the lack of media coverage and public awareness that threatens to overshadow the importance of this referendum.

Political leaders across the spectrum have echoed concerns about low voter turnout and inadequate public knowledge. Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein underscored the need for collective action to inform and mobilize voters, while Nicola Fratoianni of Sinistra Italiana criticized parties that remain silent or openly encourage abstention.

Riccardo Magi of Più Europa highlighted that many Italians are eager to vote but remain unaware of the referendum date, accusing the government of trying to suppress democratic mobilization.

Meanwhile, Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement (M5S), urged citizens to participate, warning that failure to do so would allow inequality to grow and leave decision-making in the hands of a few.

CGIL will continue its efforts until the final day, organizing initiatives nationwide to educate, raise awareness, and bring as many people as possible to the polls.

“Voting ‘Yes’ to the five referendum questions on June 8 and 9 means ending job insecurity, workplace deaths, and unjust dismissals. It means restoring dignity and rights to the forefront—because change begins with voting,” Landini concluded, stressing the profound impact this referendum could have on Italy’s future.
