On September 17, 2024, Nairobi witnessed the launch of the Ignite Her 4 Africa initiative, a dynamic platform aimed at empowering women throughout Africa.
Co-founded by Esther Wangui and Wangui Ngechu, the initiative fosters a sisterhood of emerging African women leaders committed to mutual upliftment and breaking down barriers.
The event featured impactful speeches, including one from Kenya’s first female Attorney General, Dorcas Oduor, who highlighted the urgent need for reforms in the criminal justice system affecting women.
Oduor called for the decriminalization of petty offenses and emphasized the importance of collaboration for achieving success.
Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya, addressed the alarming rise of femicide, particularly in Kenyan athletics, urging women leaders to leverage their platforms for transformative change.
Australian High Commissioner Jenny Da Rin praised the progress of African women leaders and stressed the importance of mutual support to sustain this momentum.
Ignite Her 4 Africa is anchored in four key pillars: uniting accomplished women through Women Industry Circles of Influence, celebrating rising leaders, inspiring the next generation through mentorship, and providing targeted training and networking opportunities.
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement, offering a robust support system for professional women.
Harriette Chiggai, the President’s Advisor on Women’s Rights, introduced her ‘Safe Home, Safe Spaces’ campaign, advocating for safe environments at home and work. She underscored the role of women in fostering unity and warmth in society.
With a focus on mentorship, recognition, and collaboration, Ignite Her 4 Africa seeks to unite and empower women, ensuring they continue to rise and shape the future of their communities and industries.
