Legendary Kipchoge nominated for Laureus Award

Two time Olympic Champion Eliud Kipchoge has been shortlisted among six other contestants for this year’s Laureus world sportsman of the year.

The record-breaking marathoner will battle with other sports giants including Polish striker Robert Lewandowski of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, Formula One champion Max Verstappen of the Netherlands, and recently-retired American football legend Tom Brady. 

Others nominees include world number one tennis superstar Novak Djokovic of Serbia and American swimmer Caeleb Dressel, who won five gold medals at last year’s Tokyo Olympics. 

In a statement through his official Twitter account, Kipchoge said that it’s an honor to be nominated alongside other world stars for the coveted award.

“I can say it’s an honour to be nominated as Sports Personality of the Year Award 2021. Fantastic to be in the same list as great sportsmen like Tom Brady, Novak Djokovic, Caeleb Dressel, Robert Lewandowski & Max Verstappen. Thank you to all for your great support!.” read the statement.

The Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award nominees are Australian tennis world No 1 Ashleigh Barty, USA athlete Allyson Felix, Spanish footballer Alexia Putellas, Jamaican athlete Elaine Thompson-Herah, Australian swimmer Emma McKeon and USA swimmer Katie Ledecky.

The Nominees for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award are Argentina’s men’s football team, Barcelona’s women’s football team, China’s Olympic diving team, Italy’s men’s football team, Mercedes-AMG Petronas formula one team and USA basketball outfit Milwaukee Bucs.

The 22-year-old Laureus Awards is an annual ceremony to fete and honour sportspersons and teams that have used sports to create change on and off the field by virtue of their performances.
