The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has asked police to expedite investigations into the deaths of two students at the main campus.
JKUAT in a statement to the press dismissed claims that the two students committed suicide after missing on the graduation list due to the missing marks.
“We confirm that Lenny Jessy Masiga and Irene Monica Mwangi were JKUAT students pursuing Strategic Management in the school of entrepreneurship and BSc Business Computing respectively and their records are in order,” JKUAT Corporate Communication Officer (CCO) Joan Mutua said in a press statement on Friday, July 1.
According to the police report, their bodies were found in their respective hostels outside JKUAT in Maya Apartments, Kenyatta Road and Kwa Njoro Area 2.
Preliminary findings had shown Mwangi hanged herself after her body was found in her bathroom’s door frame at a Juja apartment; A piece of cloth was found around the neck and was subjected to forensic analysis.
On June 25, the body of the fourth-year student Masiga was found hanging in his room in Juja, Kiambu County.
The body was discovered by his girlfriend who had gone to visit him. Police said they discovered the deceased had a stab wound in the chest and he used a laptop cable to hang himself.
This happened after other students who had completed their studies graduated on June 28 during the institution’s 38th graduation ceremony.
Mutua noted that JKUAT is committed to the well-being of its students and extended their condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the deceased students.
