Kenya’s music streaming industry is experiencing rapid growth, with Spotify reporting strong and consistent gains in listening activity five years after its launch in the country.
Since entering the Kenyan market in February 2021, the global audio streaming platform has played a central role in transforming how audiences discover, consume, and share music.
Data from the company shows that listening in Kenya has grown steadily year on year, recording an average growth rate of 68% through to 2025.
The growth reflects broader shifts in digital consumption, driven by increasing smartphone penetration, improved internet access, and a young, tech-savvy population.
Kenya’s average Spotify listener is 26 years old, underscoring the influence of a digitally native audience shaping music trends in real time.
Amapiano and Genre Diversity Drive Growth
One of the most striking trends is the explosive rise of Amapiano, the South African genre that has become a staple across Kenyan playlists.
Streams of Amapiano music surged by more than 1,400% between 2021 and 2025, making it one of the fastest-growing genres on the platform.
Other genres have also recorded significant growth, pointing to an increasingly diverse listening culture. Gospel and praise music streams rose by over 1,100%, while R&B, Afrobeats, and hip-hop/rap grew by 737%, 680%, and 520% respectively.
This diversification highlights a shift toward genre fluidity, with listeners exploring a wider mix of sounds from across Africa and beyond.
Indigenous Language Music Gains Momentum
Music in Kenyan indigenous languages is also experiencing a resurgence. Local-language listening more than doubled over the five-year period, growing by 101% within Kenya.
Beyond the country’s borders, demand for Kenyan indigenous-language content is also rising. Global listening increased significantly, including a 128% spike in 2024, indicating growing international interest in authentic Kenyan sounds and storytelling.
Global Stars Dominate as Local Artists Rise
International artists continue to feature prominently among Kenya’s most-streamed acts. Over the past five years, names such as Drake, Chris Brown, Future, Burna Boy, and Travis Scott have consistently topped the charts among Kenyan listeners.
At the same time, local artists are steadily gaining ground. Tracks such as “Inauma” by Bien, “Aki Sioni” by Njerae, and “Beta” by Mutoriah have resonated strongly with audiences, reflecting a growing appetite for homegrown music.
Popular regional and continental hits, including songs by Ruger, Ayra Starr, Asake, and Fireboy DML, further illustrate the cross-border appeal shaping Kenya’s playlists.
More Creators, More Content
The number of Kenyan artists distributing their music on Spotify has grown by 112% since the platform’s launch, signaling an expanding pipeline of local talent embracing digital platforms to reach wider audiences.
This growth is supported by lower barriers to entry for artists and increased opportunities for independent creators to distribute music globally without traditional gatekeepers.
Rising Engagement and Podcast Growth
User engagement on the platform continues to deepen. Kenyan listeners have created more than 9 million playlists over the past five years, demonstrating a strong culture of music curation and personalization.
Listening time has also reached new highs. In 2025 alone, Kenyans streamed more than 203 million hours of music on Spotify. Podcast consumption is also on the rise, with more than 35 million hours of podcasts streamed since 2021.
A Culture of Discovery
As the music catalogue expands, so does listener discovery. Data shows that the average Kenyan Spotify user streams 124 different artists per month, reflecting a growing appetite for exploring new music.
The trend underscores the platform’s role not just as a music library, but as a discovery engine that connects listeners to emerging sounds and artists from across the globe.
