Nairobi’s destination event scene gets another boost as Geco Hangout returns

Nairobi-based collective Geco Tribe will host the latest edition of Geco Hangout on 1st–2nd May at Lukenya Conservancy, as the city’s market for destination leisure experiences continues to mature.

The two-day outdoor event — combining live music, DJ performances, camping and open-air social spaces — is part of a broader trend reshaping Nairobi’s entertainment economy. Where the city’s nightlife once dominated leisure spending among young urban professionals, a new category of destination gatherings is capturing both attention and wallet share, drawing attendees out of the city and into curated overnight experiences.

Geco Hangout is designed as an immersive weekend rather than a single-night event. Guests arrive on Saturday afternoon, move between music, food, outdoor activities and social spaces through the evening and night, and return to the city on Sunday — a format that commands a higher spend per attendee than a conventional event while offering organisers stronger brand loyalty and word-of-mouth reach.

Accommodation and ticketing options are tiered to capture different segments of the market, ranging from solo camping packages and shared tent options to bring-your-own-tent passes and non-camping day tickets — a structure that broadens the accessible price range without diluting the experience.

The event is organised by Geco Tribe, the community-focused collective behind Geco Cafe, which has built a reputation for culturally engaged, creatively curated experiences across music, food and social gatherings. Geco Hangout represents their flagship destination offering, and reflects a wider shift in how Nairobi’s entrepreneurial and creative class is choosing to invest its leisure time and disposable income.

The lineup draws on both local and regional talent, featuring artists including Case, Big Nyagz, Mackinlay & Orchestre De Lá Rhumba, Wyre, Kasiva Mutua, Brian Sigu and South African acts Naak and Mikey, among others — signalling an event that is as much about platform-building for East African artists as it is about entertainment.

“It’s about championing the music scene in Kenya while creating something that feels both grounded and expansive,” said Mateus Finato of Geco Tribe.

Set against the rock formations and open landscape of Lukenya Conservancy — less than an hour from the city — the event makes a strong case that some of Nairobi’s most valuable cultural and commercial moments are now happening just beyond its boundaries.

Geco Hangout takes place 1st–2nd May. Tickets are available via gecotribe.hustlesasa.shop.
