A remarkable surge in global travel throughout 2025 has propelled visa applications to unprecedented levels across numerous countries.
According to a joint report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and VFS Global, the African Travel & Tourism sector could inject US$168 billion into the continent’s economy and create over 18 million jobs.
This transformative potential hinges on strategic policies, including upgraded air infrastructure, efficient visa processing systems, and targeted tourism marketing to attract international visitors.
The soaring demand for visa appointments has opened the door to fraudulent schemes, with scammers posing as VFS Global employees, affiliates, or third-party agents. These fraudsters exploit visa applicants and jobseekers by offering expedited appointment slots for a fee, preying on those eager to secure travel documentation.
Mr. Stephen Kubasu, General Manager-Operations at VFS Global, issued a stern warning about these scams.
“Visa appointment slots are allocated online based on demand forecasts and Consulate capacity,” he explained.
“Applicants must arrive at our Visa Application Centres 15 minutes early to avoid missing their slot. We strongly caution against engaging with touts who falsely promise early bookings for payment. Many scammers create fake profiles on social media or search platforms, misusing our logos and official branding to mislead travellers. These fraudulent listings often include deceptive contact details, causing applicants to mistake them for legitimate VFS Global channels.”
To address this growing threat, VFS Global has implemented robust anti-fraud measures. Entry to Visa Application Centres is now restricted to those with confirmed appointments, enhancing security protocols. A new validation system links visa application form reference numbers to booking references, ensuring authenticity.
An OTP (One-Time Password) is required to book appointments, reducing unauthorized agent interference. VFS Global has also launched a comprehensive anti-fraud campaign, embedding warnings in social media posts, appointment letters, call centre messages, and physical posters. Applicants who encounter suspicious activities are urged to report details to acco@vfsglobal.com for immediate investigation.
The overwhelming demand for outbound travel has extended visa processing times, prompting VFS Global to introduce operational enhancements. The company has expanded operating hours, allocated dedicated slots for passport submission and collection, and increased waiting areas to accommodate applicants more comfortably. These measures aim to streamline processes and mitigate delays at Visa Application Centres.
Note to Editors: VFS Global’s Limited Role
VFS Global does not control visa appointment availability or visa decisions. The company handles only administrative and non-discretionary tasks related to visa, passport, and consular services for its client governments. All decisions regarding visa approvals, required documentation, and processing timelines are the sole responsibility of the respective governments. Applicants are advised to arrive 15 minutes early for appointments to avoid forfeiture. Visa appointments are free and available exclusively through www.vfsglobal.com on a first-come, first-served basis.
Visa processing times vary by diplomatic mission, and applicants should check expected turnaround times on the VFS Global website before applying. Optional services, such as Prime Time or Form-filling, do not guarantee faster or favorable visa outcomes, as these decisions rest with Embassies or Consulates. However, premium services like Visa At Your Doorstep have grown increasingly popular over the past three years, with travellers valuing the convenience these offerings provide, despite additional costs.
Common Reasons for Visa Rejections
The leading cause of visa application denials is the submission of inaccurate or incomplete information. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the document checklist on www.vfsglobal.com or the relevant country’s official website to ensure compliance. At select locations, VFS Global offers an optional form-filling service for an additional fee, which helps applicants submit accurate information and reduces the risk of rejection.
