Carrefour has launched self-checkout services at its Two Rivers Mall outlet, becoming the retailer’s 12th location in Nairobi to offer the technology as part of its broader digital transformation strategy.
The service, introduced on 24 September 2025, features an upgraded Android-based system designed to deliver faster and more seamless transactions. The interface mirrors familiar smartphone layouts, allowing customers to scan items and complete purchases with minimal friction.
Shoppers can pay using multiple methods including mobile money, bank cards, MyCLUB loyalty points, or Carrefour gift cards, providing flexibility at checkout.
The rollout forms part of Carrefour’s wider push into retail technology, which includes the Carrefour mobile app, mobile Scan&Go functionality, and Go Green digital receipts. Majid Al Futtaim, which holds exclusive rights to operate Carrefour in Kenya, has positioned these innovations as central to enhancing convenience and customer satisfaction.
The self-checkout expansion comes as retailers across Kenya increasingly adopt automated solutions to reduce wait times and improve the shopping experience. Carrefour operates 30 stores nationwide, with 25 in Nairobi and surrounding areas, four in Mombasa, and one in Kisumu.
Majid Al Futtaim Retail operates over 390 Carrefour stores across 12 markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, serving more than 700,000 customers daily. In Kenya, the company sources 99 percent of its products locally.
