Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has appointed Prof. Mike Kuria as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Commission for University Education (CUE).

According to a statement by CUE Chair Chacha Nyaigotti, Kuria will replace the current CEO Mwenda Ntarangwi whose term ends on September 4. His appointment will take effect from September 5, 2022, and will run for five years, subject to renewal.

“The Commission for University Education is pleased to welcome Prof. Kuria as the new CEO to continue with its important mandate of regulating and overseeing university education,” CUE said.

He takes over from Prof. Mwenda Ntarangwi, whose term comes to an end on September 4, 2022.

“In a letter dated July 14, 2022, the CS informed Prof. Kuria that he would serve as the Commission’s secretary and Chief Executive Officer for five years renewable once starting September 5, 2022,” the commission’s press statement read in part.

The commission says the appointment comes after a recruitment exercise that attracted 49 applicants, 15 of whom were shortlisted for the final interviews.

“Prof Kuria is a multi-skilled and versatile leader and academic with extensive experience and expertise in quality assurance in higher education in Kenya and beyond,” the commission said.

Kuria will be expected to regulate, oversee university education in the country and contribute to university education initiatives.

CUE’s incoming boss has previously worked as the Director, Centre for Quality Assurance at Daystar University, a position he held for 10 years.

He was also the first Secretary-General of the East African Quality Assurance Network in 2012.

In 2016, he was recruited as the Deputy Executive Secretary of IUCEA.
