Girl Effect, a renowned global non-profit dedicated to empowering adolescent girls and young women, unveiled its groundbreaking Tukisonga campaign, setting the stage for a transformative journey for Kenyan youth. With a core focus on health, economic empowerment, and personal development, the campaign promises to inspire change and create opportunities, especially for young women navigating life’s pivotal decisions.
The campaign’s title, Tukisonga—Swahili for “as we move”—captures the indomitable spirit of Kenyan youth as they push boundaries and overcome obstacles to shape their futures. Nancy Njoki, Girl Effect’s Country Director for Kenya, emphasized, “Tukisonga is more than a campaign; it’s a call to action, a testament to the resilience and power of young Kenyans to forge a brighter tomorrow.”
A Multimedia Powerhouse: Introducing ‘Tuki’
A central pillar of Tukisonga is Tuki, a 10-episode TV drama series premiering on December 6, 2024, on NTV and K24 at 7:30 PM. This compelling series portrays relatable characters grappling with real-life challenges in reproductive health, economic empowerment, and societal expectations. Through their stories, Tuki seeks to spark vital conversations and empower viewers with practical insights.
“The series is designed to educate while entertaining,” said Ray Mwihaki, Production Manager at Girl Effect Kenya. “It’s a space where youth can learn, share experiences, and draw inspiration from narratives of resilience and growth.”
Complementing the TV series, Tukisonga encompasses a dynamic mix of initiatives, including:
- A youth-hosted podcast exploring key themes.
- Radio campaigns and community screenings in Nairobi and Migori counties.
- Digital platforms fostering interaction and engagement among young people.
A Star-Studded Launch Event
The campaign’s exclusive launch event last week was a resounding success. Attendees, including cast members, media personalities Azeezah and Gudah Man, key stakeholders, and vibrant youth, enjoyed a special screening of the first two Tuki episodes. The premiere not only showcased the impactful storytelling but also underscored Girl Effect’s commitment to youth empowerment.
Empowering Through Technology and Connection
Tukisonga builds on Girl Effect’s impressive track record of youth engagement. Their digital platform, WAZZII, has already reached over one million Kenyan youth, providing vital sexual and reproductive health information. With Tukisonga, the organization continues to scale its impact, blending technology with community-driven solutions.
