Nearly 62% of global logistics professionals say their companies are planning additional or first-time investments in Africa, according to a closely watched yearly industry survey.
The survey of 830 logistics executives is part of the 15th annual Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index , a snapshot of industry sentiment and ranking of the world’s 50 leading emerging markets.
The Index ranks countries for overall competitiveness based on their logistics strengths, business climates and digital readiness — factors that make them attractive to logistics providers, freight forwarders, air and ocean carriers, distributors and investors. In the 2024 Index, the rankings of most African economies changed little from a year earlier, but businesses indicate they are looking ahead at massive population growth and trade expansion spurred by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“This is the most optimism we’ve seen about Africa in the 15 years of the Index,” says Agility Vice Chairman Tarek Sultan. “Africa’s population will double by 2050, when one in four people on the planet will be African. International businesses realize that the time is now for Africa — they need to invest, establish their brands, and develop the next generation of African talent if they’re going to ride the coming wave of growth.”
China and India were 1 and 2 in the 50-country Index rankings. In Africa, Egypt (20), Morocco (22), South Africa (24) and Kenya (25) were the top performers, followed by Ghana (31), Nigeria (36), Tunisia (37), Tanzania (41), Algeria (42), Uganda (43), Ethiopia (45), Mozambique (46), Angola (47), Libya (50).
Egypt has Africa’s highest-ranked domestic logistics opportunities — 13th in that category; South Africa (15) was tops in Africa for international logistics; Morocco (12) has Africa’s best business fundamentals; Kenya (9) is Africa’s most digitally ready – and the continent’s highest-ranked country in any category.
More than 63% of survey respondents say their companies continue overhauling supply chains by spreading production to multiple locations or relocating it to home markets and nearby countries. China, the world’s leading producer, stands to be most affected: 37.4% of industry professionals say they plan move production/sourcing out of China or reduce investment there.
This is the most optimism we’ve seen about Africa in the 15 years of the Index
Shipping and logistics costs that soared during the COVID pandemic and its aftermath are still climbing but at a slower rate, the survey found. One way shippers expect to cope is by increasing use of digital freight forwarding from 37.8% today to 52% in five years.

Transport Intelligence (https://apo-opa.co/4bp0Ijf) (Ti), a leading analysis and research firm for the logistics industry, has compiled the Index since it was launched in 2009.
John Manners-Bell, Chief Executive of Ti, said: “Supply chain managers are still coming to terms with the political and economic instability characterizing the post-COVID global economy. Geopolitical relationships are changing rapidly, and this is having a major impact on international trade and risk profiles. Businesses need to be alive to the opportunities and threats that exist in emerging markets and use data, such as the Agility Emerging Market Logistics Index, to inform agile decision-making.”
The government of Italy unveiled a near US$6 billion plan to support African development at a one-day Italy-Africa plan in Rome on Monday. African Development Bank Group President Dr Akinwumi Adesina joined 25 African leaders and European Union officials at the summit.
The summit—which took place as Italy assumes the Presidency of the G7 this month, and a few weeks ahead of the 37th Ordinary Assembly of the African Union in Addis Ababa—was one at which Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni called for a new Italian partnership with Africa.
Meloni said: “We believe it is possible to envision and write a new chapter in the history of our relationship, cooperation among equals, far from any predatory imposition or charitable stance towards Africa. There is a natural inclination for Italy to be a bridge between Africa and Europe. The whole world cannot think about the future without Africa.”
The Italian leader announced various initiatives to bolster economic links and create an energy hub for Europe while curbing African emigration to Europe. They included an initial pledge of €5.5 billion (US$5.95 billion) including guarantees.
African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki welcomed the pledged support while noting that prior consultation with the African continent would have been desirable, particularly when the Mattei Plan was being drafted. He said the plan, nonetheless, aligns with Africa’s priorities.
On the matter of economic and infrastructure cooperation, Adesina highlighted the African Development Bank Group’s key role in supporting African countries. He said Africa’s economic trajectory was compelling.
“With a population of 1.4 billion, the largest youth population in the world, the largest renewable energy sources in the world, the largest deposits of critical minerals and metals globally, and the largest share of uncultivated arable land left in the world, Africa will determine the future of the world,” Adesina said.
When Africa prospers, Europe prospers and the whole world can
The African Development Bank Group head underscored Africa’s economic resilience, noting that despite global economic headwinds of climate change, conflicts, and a health pandemic, the continent had stayed strong, with real GDP growth of 4.1% in 2022, higher than the global average of 3.5% for the same period.

To address a key challenge to Africa’s accelerated development, notably a large infrastructure financing gap of roughly US$68–108 billion annually, he told leaders that the African Development Bank had invested $44 billion in infrastructure over the last seven years. He said this was for developing ports, railways, transport corridors, energy, and digital infrastructure.
The Bank Group chief commended the Italian government for the Rome Process Financing Facility, which will provide €100 million (90% of which is concessional financing) towards support for infrastructure in Africa, especially for renewable energy, energy efficiency projects, water and sanitation, and agriculture initiatives, as well as vocational training and job creation. He welcomed Italy’s ‘Mattei Plan for Africa,’ which he acknowledged had prioritized energy security.
Adesina addressed the challenge of illegal migration from African countries, stressing that it was critical to continue supporting the economic growth and development of African nations, reducing fragility, and building resilience.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called for a united front in cracking down on people smugglers. She said: “The best way to do this is to join forces and crack down on the criminals, and in parallel, build alternatives to the deadly smuggling routes,” she said.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said: “When Africa prospers, Europe prospers and the whole world can.”
African leaders who addressed the summit were the African Union Chairperson, President Azali Assoumani of Comoros, President Macky Sall of Senegal, Ghanian President Nana Akufo-Addo, Kenyan President William Ruto, President Denis Sassou-Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia. Others were President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, President Kais Saied of Tunisia, President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique, President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia, and Prime Minister Ulisses Correa e Silva of Cabo Verde.
Other prominent figures included UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and European Council President Charles Michel.

The information security industry is on high alert due to a variety of new and growing cybersecurity threats. The data and assets of businesses, governments, and people are always at risk due to sophisticated cyber-attacks involving malware, phishing, identity theft, and more.
Even though conversation about cyber security has gradually moved from the IT department to the boardroom in recent years, the bad news is that cyber-criminal activities frequently outpace business security efforts, necessitating the constant adaptation of security teams to a threat environment that is constantly changing.
In a recent survey conducted by IEEE, which included 350 chief technology officers, chief information officers, and IT directors, 51% of participants cited cloud vulnerability as their top concern, whereas 43% cited data center vulnerability as their top concern, highlighting the need for organizations to focus on securing their cloud and data center infrastructure, as these areas are becoming increasingly targeted by cybercriminals.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, so do the threats that aim to exploit it. Cybercriminals are expected to continue to use increasingly sophisticated methods to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information and disrupt critical systems. Hence, industry experts must keep an open eye on cybersecurity threats, to lead their organization best, and to avoid being a part of any data privacy mishaps.
Here are the top 5 cybersecurity threats to watch out for:
As technology continues to evolve and play a central role in our lives, individuals and organizations need to stay vigilant and adapt to the new threats that may arise. It is important to implement security measures such as using multi-factor authentication, keeping software updated, and regularly backing up important data. Regularly training employees to detect and avoid potential cyber threats, will be critical in protecting the organization from a cyber attack.
