Green Generation Initiative (GGI) planted 2,000 indigenous trees in Oloolua Forest’s Turaco Camp on Saturday, 10 October, to mark Mazingira Day. The planting was part of Conservation Is Fun, a GGI experience that brings people together to find joy in restoring and protecting nature.
The activity supports Kenya’s national goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, which aims to restore degraded landscapes and raise tree cover to 30 percent. It drew young people, students, environmental enthusiasts, conservation advocates, corporates and members of the public.
Beyond planting, participants joined a guided nature walk and took part in environmental education sessions, interactive games, colour activities, music, dance and performances. The day ended with participants sharing what they had learnt and experienced, building a sense of community around a shared purpose of caring for nature.
“As an organization, we will continue creating this platform and experience across Kenya as we want all citizens to find joy in caring for nature and feel part of a community that is restoring it. Conservation Is Fun brings people together to learn, plant trees, and enjoy that shared experience. Our responsibility continues after the event, because the trees we plant need care to survive and grow,” said Elizabeth Wathuti, O.G.W., Founder and CEO of Green Generation Initiative (GGI).
Conservation Is Fun gives people a hands-on role in protecting and restoring nature, with a particular focus on young people. By pairing restoration with recreation, it encourages participants to build a lasting bond with nature and carry on conservation work in their own communities.
GGI stressed that planting is only the start, since the long-term value of a tree depends on whether the seedling survives. Choosing suitable species, using correct planting techniques and giving consistent aftercare are essential for the trees to grow and contribute to forest restoration.

The organisation urged participants to carry the spirit of Mazingira Day forward by continuing to grow and care for trees, protecting ecosystems and bringing others into conservation.
