The Nairobi River Regeneration Program Committee has unearthed the underlying problem that has left the city river a dumpsite, posing both a health risk and an environmental hazard.
Nairobi River, a source of agriculture consumption and ecosystems, has been at a high risk of river pollution, recently being contaminated by domestic waste from the slums and industrial waste from the industries.
Environment CS Aden Duale said that the journey to reclaim the river will commence and has put a notice on companies and slaughterhouses that are choking the river with their affluent waste.
A survey conducted on the river showed that informal settlements, industrial buildings and other commercial enterprises along the river discharge their waste often.
“ We have noticed that the sewage main line passes inside the river which is dysfunctional and we have to remove a serious infrastructure investment to remove and redo the sewer line.” He added.
The 145 entities, including the slaughterhouses in Nairobi, have been instructed to comply with the restoration order issued by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). He further said that 10,000 youth started work on Monday to clean the Nairobi River and he and the president will join the youth soon to exercise the process as well.
