Mukutan Conservancy is making significant strides in Laikipia County by merging environmental sustainability with community empowerment.
In a region facing drought and resource conflicts, Mukutan has developed comprehensive livestock management programs that help local pastoralists enhance their livelihoods while addressing climate change challenges.
At the core of Mukutan’s mission is the focus on improving economic conditions for local communities while preserving biodiversity.
The conservancy’s innovative livestock projects have generated over KES40 million for residents through the sale of more than700 cattle, alleviating pressure on communal lands and ensuring the continuity of traditional pastoralist lifestyles.
Local herder Losiokana Tuikong notes, “For us, cattle is everything. Mukutan has given us a way to keep our traditions alive while securing a future for our children.”
Mukutan addresses the challenges faced by pastoralist communities through targeted initiatives. The Dedicated Grass Bank offers designated grazing areas during dry seasons, reducing conflicts over land usage.
This program not only secures grazing rights but also creates employment for over100 individuals in herding and management.
Additionally, the Livestock Fattening Program enables pastoralists to entrust Mukutan with managing their cattle for fattening and sale.
This arrangement alleviates logistical burdens and provides stable income, with over KES40 million generated since its implementation.
Local pastoralist John Lomany remarks, “With Mukutan managing the fattening and sale of our livestock, I have found a sense of security.”
As the impacts of climate change grow more pronounced, Mukutan’s initiatives offer a sustainable development model that integrates economic and environmental health.
Through its commitment to biodiversity and community empowerment, Mukutan demonstrates that protecting the environment and enhancing community resilience are mutually reinforcing goals.
