Gor Mahia’s impressive resurgence in January has been rewarded with top individual honours, as fullback Paul Ochuoga and head coach Charles Akonnor were named the SportPesa League Player and Coach of the Month respectively.

The record champions enjoyed a strong start to the year, winning five of their six matches to open a four-point lead at the summit over arch-rivals AFC Leopards, who have a game in hand.

The turnaround in form not only reignited Gor Mahia’s title charge but also placed the spotlight firmly on two key figures behind the revival.

Ochuoga, a 21-year-old academy graduate, was instrumental in Gor Mahia’s success. Operating down the right flank, the energetic defender combined defensive solidity with attacking flair, registering five goal involvements during the month. His contributions included one goal and three assists, the highest attacking return among players over the period.

“This award means a lot to me because it reflects the work we put in as a team,” Ochuoga said after receiving the accolade. “I dedicate it to my coaches, teammates, and the fans who push us to be and remain the best in such a competitive league.”

For his performances, Ochuoga received a KES 50,000 cash prize and a customised trophy courtesy of SportPesa.

AFC Leopards defender Kaycie Odhiambo finished as runner-up for the Player of the Month award. Odhiambo played a pivotal role in his side’s defensive solidity, helping secure three clean sheets in five matches and scoring a decisive goal in a victory over Sofapaka.

Akonnor’s Redemption Arc

For head coach Charles ‘CK’ Akonnor, the January award marks his second Coach of the Month recognition this season, having previously claimed the honour in October 2025.

The Ghanaian tactician had come under intense scrutiny in December after Gor Mahia managed just one win in five matches, prompting sections of the fan base to question his leadership.

However, the new year brought renewed energy and results, as the team responded emphatically to his tactical adjustments.

“January was demanding, but the players responded well to our ideas,” Akonnor noted. “We are building something, and this is further testament that the work the technical team is doing is taking shape.”

Akonnor received a KES 75,000 cash prize and a customised trophy alongside the award.

Gor Mahia recorded an impressive 83 per cent win rate in January — the highest in the league — scoring 15 goals, conceding just four, and keeping three clean sheets across six fixtures. The statistics underline the team’s balance between attacking potency and defensive discipline during the month.

AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani was named runner-up after guiding his side to an 80 per cent win rate. Leopards conceded only two goals in five matches, maintaining pressure at the top of the table.

Data-Driven Selection

The SportPesa League monthly awards are determined through a data-driven process led by Tisini, which compiles detailed match statistics and performance metrics to ensure fairness and objectivity.

“Our role is to ensure that performances are evaluated fairly and consistently using data from every match,” said Havighurst Calsberg, Tisini Head of Football Operations. “Paul Ochuoga and Charles Akonnor stood out not just in results, but in measurable impact across key performance indicators throughout January.”

SportPesa reiterated that the awards are part of its broader commitment to strengthening Kenyan football by recognising excellence and encouraging professionalism within the league.

“These awards are about celebrating impact, consistency, and professionalism,” said Japheth Akulia, SportPesa Partnerships and Sponsorships Manager. “By backing a transparent, data-led process, we aim to motivate players and coaches while deepening fan engagement with the league.”

With momentum firmly on their side and individual accolades reinforcing their progress, Gor Mahia will now look to sustain their form as the title race intensifies in the coming weeks.
