Wanjigi locked out of the presidential race

by Ndungu Brian

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati has rejected the nomination of Jimmy Wanjigi as a presidential candidate in the August 9 general elections.

Wafula Chebukati said he cannot clear Wanjigi over lack of a university degree certificate

“Degree certificate is mandatory and due to that, I am rejecting your application to be nominated as a candidate for the presidential election slated for August 9, this year. That is my decision as to the returning officer for presidential elections,” ruled Mr. Chebukati.

Mr. Wanjigi protested the decision by IEBC claiming that there is a clear motive by IEBC to eliminate some candidates and apply different rules to different people. This is after IEBC cleared Walter Mong’are who has they claimed had the same issues as Mr. Wanjigi.

“It is very clear what is going on here, there is a very clear ‘mchujo’ (elimination) being decided somewhere else, not here,” You cannot apply different rules to different people, and this is the intention and your direction as a commission, then I fear greatly for the coming elections,” said Mr. Wanjigi shortly after the verdict.

“We have come very clearly armed to fulfill all the obligations, statutory and otherwise. We have been in touch with this commission and we were told all the documents were in order, we are privy of a previous candidate being passed on the same documentation for education as we have presented and we were told it is fine,” added Mr. Wanjigi.

The parties that have issues regarding their clearance have been asked to visit the dispute resolution committee for further action.
