Logistics platform Sendy has announced that it will be providing health insurance for its drivers, making it the first digital marketplace provider to extend a health benefit cover to its driver-partners and their families.

In a statement, the firm’s Chief Operations Officer Ambrose Nyangao says the partnership with Insurance For All (IFA) will increase universal healthcare coverage.

Through the cover, drivers will pay premiums of only Sh81 daily which will be deductible from the Sendy app.

Only 15.8 percent of Kenya’s population are covered by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which is equivalent to over 80 percent of the total population with any form of health insurance in Kenya.

“Nothing distracts you from your hard work as much as your family getting unwell and you do not have the cash to pay. If you take cover with AfyaPoa, you will be able to take care of all your insurance needs in terms of healthcare,” Nyangao said.

“We believe that the AfyaPoa cover is a timely, accessible and affordable solution that will enable our partners to get back on their feet quicker in the event of illness and be less exposed to erosion of their earnings,” said Chris Nyaga, Country Manager – Sendy Merchant Business Unit.

Among benefits that the AfyaPoa cover offers include: COVID-19 coverage, access to home visits and dial in consultations, chronic disease management, access to free nutrition advice, access to family planning services, free wellness check-ups upon registration as well as access to the AfyaPoa app.

In addition to the AfyaPoa cover, Sendy also offers personal accident cover, road rescue, goods in transit (GIT) insurance and access to personal loans through a welfare scheme. The AfyaPoa cover will further boost their well being enabling them to be more productive at work and get their families covered.

Sendy is a platform for businesses seeking to trade with ease. Sendy currently offers delivery for over 5,000 businesses some of which include Unilever, Jumia, Copia, DHL and Safaricom.
