Nandi senator Samson Cherargei arrested
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was on Thursday afternoon arrested and taken to Nairobi for questioning.
“I have just been arrested and taken to Nairobi.” The senator announced via his Facebook page.
A Nairobi court had directed the investigating officer to probe him for causing disturbance in court earlier this month while facing hate speech charges. He denied the charges labeled against him but the case is yet to be concluded.
Chief magistrate Wendy Micheni asked the Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti and the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to investigate the legislator’s conduct and whether it constitutes disturbance or obstruction of justice.
This is after Cherargei made attempts to stall the trial by making numerous applications including asking Milimani chief magistrate Wendy Kagendo to recuse herself from the case on grounds that she was not giving him a fair trial.
“I will therefore not recuse myself (from the case). I am not hostile to the accused person and I have no interest in the matter. It is my finding that the application for recusal is another way to find adjournment through the back door” the magistrate ruled.
