Top 5 Cybersecurity Threats to look out for in 2024

by Kwabe Ben January 22, 2024
written by Kwabe Ben

By Hariprasad Viswanathan, Head- Sub Saharan Africa, VFS Global

The information security industry is on high alert due to a variety of new and growing cybersecurity threats. The data and assets of businesses, governments, and people are always at risk due to sophisticated cyber-attacks involving malware, phishing, identity theft, and more.

Even though conversation about cyber security has gradually moved from the IT department to the boardroom in recent years, the bad news is that cyber-criminal activities frequently outpace business security efforts, necessitating the constant adaptation of security teams to a threat environment that is constantly changing.

In a recent survey conducted by IEEE, which included 350 chief technology officers, chief information officers, and IT directors, 51% of participants cited cloud vulnerability as their top concern, whereas 43% cited data center vulnerability as their top concern, highlighting the need for organizations to focus on securing their cloud and data center infrastructure, as these areas are becoming increasingly targeted by cybercriminals.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, so do the threats that aim to exploit it.  Cybercriminals are expected to continue to use increasingly sophisticated methods to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information and disrupt critical systems. Hence, industry experts must keep an open eye on cybersecurity threats, to lead their organization best, and to avoid being a part of any data privacy mishaps.

Here are the top 5 cybersecurity threats to watch out for:

  • Ransomware: According to a recent Statista report published in October 2023, more than 72% of organizations globally were impacted by ransomware attacks in 2023. This number was by far the largest reported and shows growth over the preceding five years., Although this does not imply that every attempt was successful, it does show how common this cyber threat is. Threat actors can now very easily gain access to powerful ransomware tools and with just a little technical know-how, fraudsters may launch attacks that cost businesses millions of dollars. These attacks have become more targeted, and attackers are now demanding larger ransoms. If these attacks continue, businesses, governments, people, and organizations across almost every industry will be plagued by ransomware.

  • Data Poisoning: Artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) are sometimes a double-edged sword as businesses use them to boost defenses and avoid cybercrimes. AI and machine learning (AI/ML) surely open up new possibilities for businesses in every industry, according to an IBM 2022 survey that revealed that 35% of organizations were utilizing AI in their business and 42% were exploring it. But as hackers become more sophisticated, they are also using this technology to carry out their attacks. AI and data poisoning are two methods used by attackers to do this, which presents a serious challenge for those in the field of cyber security.

  • Cloud-based attacks: The number of attacks on cloud infrastructure has risen sharply in recent years, with the COVID-19 pandemic playing a significant role in this trend. As businesses of all sizes had to quickly adapt to new ways of operating, many turned to cloud-based solutions. According to Gartner, it is anticipated that global end-user spending on public cloud services will reach $591.8 billion in 2023 and by 2025 over 95% of new digital workloads will be deployed on cloud-native platforms. As a result, businesses must now consider new and robust security strategies to manage the growing risks associated with cloud services. The following statistics reflect the growing popularity of cloud computing and the corresponding increase in attacks on these systems in recent years.

  • AI-based attacks: In cybersecurity, artificial intelligence is becoming more and more significant, both for good and harm. The most recent AI-based techniques can help organizations better identify risks and safeguard their systems and data resources. However, cybercriminals can use this technology to drive complex attacks.  AI can be used to detect patterns in computer systems that reveal vulnerabilities in software or security programs and hackers can exploit these weaknesses. AI can also be used in combination with stolen personal information or publicly available data, such as social media posts, to create large numbers of phishing emails to spread malware or gather valuable information.

  • 5G attacks G technology, although promising with its benefits, also poses some security risks that are worth taking into account. These may include an increased risk of supply chain attacks on 5G infrastructure, which could result in malicious software and hardware from untrusted vendors being used, or the shift towards edge computing with 5G, where computing resources are located at the edge of the network rather than a central hub, may increase the likelihood of untrusted and potentially unsecured devices connecting to the 5G network.

As technology continues to evolve and play a central role in our lives, individuals and organizations need to stay vigilant and adapt to the new threats that may arise. It is important to implement security measures such as using multi-factor authentication, keeping software updated, and regularly backing up important data. Regularly training employees to detect and avoid potential cyber threats, will be critical in protecting the organization from a cyber attack.

East Africa Takes the Lead in Stears’ 2024 African Outlook Report

by Kwabe Ben January 16, 2024
written by Kwabe Ben

In a meticulous analysis driven by economic data, the 2024 African Outlook Report by Stears identifies East Africa as an emerging leader and regional powerhouse. Renowned for its nuanced insights into the continent’s economic landscape, Stears sheds light on diverse growth trajectories across Africa.

Stears, accessible at https://www.Stears.co/home/, underscores the imperative for strategic interventions aimed at enhancing liquidity and stabilizing exchange rates. The report emphasizes the pivotal role of collaborative initiatives involving government bodies, regulatory entities, and the private sector to foster sustained economic growth.

The forecast for Africa’s overall growth in 2024 stands at 4.0%, a noteworthy increase from 3.3% in 2023, positioning the continent as the second-highest globally, trailing only Asia with a growth rate of 4.8%. East Africa plays a central role in this narrative, consistently exhibiting higher growth rates than the rest of the continent. Key drivers of this growth include Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, collectively contributing significantly to the region’s economic resurgence.

Delving deeper into the analysis, Stears focuses on key African countries such as Kenya and Nigeria, revealing persistent economic challenges in both nations. Specifically, the report highlights Kenya’s anticipation of ongoing currency depreciation and inflationary pressures. In 2023, inflation averaged 7.8%, with a nuanced forecast ranging between 6% and 7.4% for 2024, aligning with the Central Bank of Kenya’s (CBK) target range of 5±2.5%, reflecting a global trend aimed at enhancing price stability.

Fadekemi Abiru, Head of Insights at Stears, attributes East Africa’s growth to dynamic sectors, including natural resources, transportation, tourism, and agriculture. The region’s potential for further acceleration is underscored by increased investment from Gulf countries, positioning East Africa as a model region for economic resilience and diversification.

However, Kenya’s GDP per capita stands 30% above the Sub-Saharan Africa average, signaling increased consumer spending and positioning the country as a significant market. The report, nonetheless, highlights the potential for further GDP per capita growth, particularly through improved job creation in high-value sectors like manufacturing and services.

Yvette Dimiri, Director at Stears, articulates the vision behind the report, stating, “Our 2024 African Outlook Report reflects Stears’ commitment to providing data-driven insights that transcend conventional narratives. As Africa navigates its course in the global economic landscape, understanding distinctive growth trajectories and leveraging regional strengths will be key.”

Luxury Norwegian Dawn Makes Grand Debut at Mombasa Port

by Brian Yatich January 16, 2024
written by Brian Yatich

The Luxury Norwegian Dawn, the longest cruise liner for this season, made its maiden visit to Mombasa’s port, bringing with it 2212 guests from at least 54 nationalities and 1113 crew members.

The Norwegian Dawn is a luxurious cruise ship operated by Norwegian Cruise Line. It was built in 2002 and underwent a significant refurbishment in 2016.

The ship can accommodate over 2,200 passengers and features a wide range of amenities, including multiple dining options, bars and lounges, a casino, spa, fitness center, and entertainment venues.

The Norwegian Dawn offers various itineraries, sailing to destinations in the Caribbean, Bermuda, Canada, and New England. With its spacious accommodations and diverse onboard activities, the ship aims to provide a memorable and comfortable cruising experience for its guests.

During the cruise’s stopover at the Mombasa port, Capt. William Ruto, the Managing Director (MD) of the Kenya Port Authority (KPA), expressed optimism about the commencement of the cruise tourism season. He highlighted the potential for better returns in the industry with the arrival of such vessels at the port.

Ruto emphasized the significant investments made by the Kenya Ports Authority in infrastructure, which have enabled the port to consistently provide efficient and reliable services, enhancing its appeal to vessels like the Norwegian Dawn.

“The kind of infrastructure we have in place as the Kenya Ports Authority is tailored towards supporting cruise tourism. We are up to the task in terms of aspects like security, and we assure both guests and staff that the port of Mombasa is safe,” said Ruto.

In his first call of the year, he urged visitors to explore Mombasa’s white sandy beaches and historical sites to boost the local tourism industry.

Mombasa County Executive Committee Member (CECM) overseeing tourism and trade, Mohamed Osman, commended the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) for their symbiotic relationship, which has played a crucial role in the notable advancements within the tourism sector.

Osman emphasized that collaborative efforts among stakeholders are fundamental to success. As part of the Mombasa County Government, he affirmed their complete dedication to working towards realizing the outlined objectives in the tourism industry, considering it the backbone of the port city.

“As Mombasa County, our role is to build a conducive environment for tourism growth, working with all relevant stakeholders to make Mombasa the premier destination in the region,” said Osman.

Captain Asen Gyurov of the Norwegian Dawn expressed gratitude towards the management of the Kenya Ports Authority and praised the seamless reception the liner received during its inaugural visit.

Gyurov conveyed optimism about the potential transformation of the port into a turnaround port for vessels in the future, attributing this expectation to the port’s exceptional performance.

Kenya, Belarus to ‘broaden tie’ after 30 years of good relations

by Kwabe Ben January 10, 2024
written by Kwabe Ben

The Presidents of Kenya and Belarus agreed to “broaden ties” during talks in Nairobi on December 10, according to the presidency as Minsk seeks to secure more African allies.

The visit by Alexander Lukashenko came weeks after Kenya and Belarus marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of relations between the two countries on November 17.

“Immense opportunities exist between Kenya and Belarus that must be exploited for the prosperity of the two countries,” Ruto said, adding that Kenya was keen on tapping Belarus technology in Agriculture.

The two leaders had earlier met on December 1 on the sidelines of the COP28 in Dubai, UAE, where they agreed on the need to exchange visits and develop a cooperation framework.

Belarus is one of the biggest producers of farm machinery in Eastern Europe, as well as agricultural products such as fertilizer.

Belarus Ambassador to Kenya Pavel Vziatkin says the two countries aim to develop strong economic and trade ties.

He notes that the two countries complement each other, especially with the economic priorities of the Kenyan government – increasing agricultural production efficiency and ensuring food security, construction of affordable housing, and development of industries are key.

Belarus might be considered as a new horizon, a promising partner and a source of new opportunities for long-term development of the Kenyan economy

“In the context of the bottom-up economic transformation agenda and Kenya Vision 2030, Belarus might be considered a new horizon, a promising partner, and a source of new opportunities for the long-term development of the Kenyan economy,” the envoy said.

Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy and ensures valuable contribution to the economic performance with a share in the GDP totaling up to 30-40 percent.

Although a landlocked small country, Belarus has been a leading exporter of dairy products to more than 110 countries around the globe. Agriculture accounts for seven percent of its gross domestic product.

The country 2021 was ranked position 23 among 113 countries by the Global Food Security Index, while Kenya took 90th place in the global report released by Economist Impact and Corteva Agriscience.

The Envoy argues that Minsk can help facilitate the main objectives of Kenya’s agricultural policy in improving food security, increasing agricultural production and output efficiency, and improving access to markets and trade.

“Being a prominent producer of agricultural machinery (every 10th tractor and every 6th harvester in the world are made in Belarus) and fertilizer, Belarus can facilitate the achievement of these goals,” the Belarusian diplomat told The Standard.

He said the Kenyan agricultural sector is one of the most promising areas for interaction, and they’re ready to share their skills, competence, technologies, and experience, including IT solutions to be implemented into the agribusiness, with Kenyan partners.

In June, Cabinet secretaries Moses Kuria (public service and formerly Trade and investment) and Mithika Linturi (Agriculture) visited Minsk and held talks with Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik and discussed prospects of cooperation in agriculture and industry.

The soft-spoken Ambassador says his goal is to improve the quality, depth and substance of bilateral relations between the two countries.

New African Magazine reveals 100 Most Influential Africans of 2023

by Kwabe Ben January 9, 2024
written by Kwabe Ben

New African magazine released its annual listing of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2023. The list celebrates the achievements and contributions of Africans from various fields and sectors, who have made a positive impact on the continent and the world.

The list features a diverse and inspiring group of men and women, who have demonstrated excellence, innovation, leadership, resilience, and vision in their respective domains. They include politicians, entrepreneurs, industrialists, environmentalists, creatives, scientists, educators, sports personalities, and more.

The list also reflects the shifting trends and priorities in Africa, as the continent faces new challenges and opportunities in the post-pandemic era. Creatives dominate the ranking with 31 representatives, including singer Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weekend, filmmaker Alice Diop, and writer Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah.

The second category with the highest number of entries was the Business section, with 25 entries. The section included two behemoths from DFIs, supporting a private sector approach to investing: Samaila Zubairu from Africa Finance Corporation and the President of Afreximbank, Benedict Oramah, undoubtedly Africa’s juggernaut from the last few years leading Africa’s transformation. Also on the list is the former CEO of Eskom and whistleblower who nearly paid with his life André de Ruyter.

Nigeria was the country most represented on the list, highlighting the country’s dominance in the creative sector and business. William Ruto, the President of Kenya, and Bola Tinubu, President of Nigeria, were the only heads of state to make it, along with the Guinean military leader Mamady Doumbouya. Doumbouya created quite a stir at this year’s UN General Assembly and appears to have found a solution around the Simandou mining saga.

With Climate Change at the top of the agenda, the list features several players in the environmental space, such as James Mwangi, formerly from Dalberg Group who has set up his own venture fund investing in climate related businesses, and Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, the Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

In the media, we have two media leaders from Côte d’Ivoire, Fabrice Sawegnon, founder of communications agency Voodoo, and Daniel Ahaoussa, serial entrepreneur and founder of a number of websites in West and Central Africa. Also included are the journalist Alan Kasujja, the BBC journalist, and Branko Brkic, founder of Daily Maverick, arguably the most powerful media in South Africa today.

And in sports, record breakers Faith Kipyegon and Kelvin Kiptum make it, as well as the Springboks team, under the leadership of their captain Siya Kolisi. Patrice Motsepe, the President of CAF, a close friend of FIFA president Gianni Infantino and an increasingly influential voice in sports, is also included.

The 100 Most Influential Africans of 2023 is a special edition of New African magazine, which offers a comprehensive and insightful overview of the lives and achievements of the selected individuals.
