East Africa Public Relations Week Slated For November

by Ndungu Brian October 19, 2022
written by Ndungu Brian

Public relations societies from seven East Africa Community member states will hold the first-ever joint public relations week in November.

The event targets to hold discussions on sustainability, climate change reporting, the blue economy, the post-pandemic workplace, and impactful partnerships.

Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) President Arik Karani said the event will bring together public relations practitioners from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.

The event will help reinforce lasting partnerships among the participating countries, building on the goal to foster sustainable practices in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

“This year, we are taking the PRSK annual summit to a new level by hosting the first-ever East Africa Public Relations Week. One of the key strategies for the Public Relations Society of Kenya’s council is to unite East African countries through cohesive communication. With PRSK turning 50, and we thought of bringing the East African Public Relations Associations together under one roof,” said Karani.

According to Karani, the event will also feature frameworks on how to advance excellence in the profession, countries, and region.

During a virtual pre-conference, the societies stressed the need for an integrated, unifying and cohesive approach to communicating the needs of the East African region.

“This will be an all-rounded conference that will have three tracks- a forum on sustainability and shared value, a PR Summit, and an awards gala. The summit will also feature break-out sessions with top industry leaders and seasoned practitioners from across the continent and fun excursions at the coastal towns to ensure that delegates have the best experience from this conference,” said Assah Mwambene, the President of the Public Relations Society of Tanzania (PRST).

Discussions during the five-day summit will include sustainability and shared value away from Corporate Social Responsibility, trust and safety, the ongoing war in Ukraine and navigating the politics of influence.

Equity Faces Snag in Acquisition of Spire Bank

by Kwabe Ben October 18, 2022
written by Kwabe Ben

Equity is faced with a hurdle in its efforts to acquire Spire bank as earlier commenced in its plans after High Court makes move to freeze the deal.

This is after employees of Spire Bank through the Bank Insurance and Finance Union sued the bank disrupting the acquisition plans.

The suing by employees was alleged of being left in the dark over the acquisition hence an unknown fate amongst the employees.

According to Employment and Labor Relations Court judge Maureen Onyango, lenders are directed to maintain their status quo till a deal is agreed upon with the employees.

“That in the meantime, status quo as of the date of this court’s orders to be maintained until either party agrees on suitable undertaking, and is signed by the respondent (union),” Justice Onyango said.

With the case set to be mentioned and heard on October 31st for affirmation on whether the lender and Union shall have agreed, this dispute is most likely going to delay the regulatory approvals from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK).

If the deal of acquisition goes through, Equity that has Sh1.3 trillion asset base will take over sh945 million in loan assets from the straining Spire Bank and deposit liabilities of Sh1.3 billion.

Equity had hoped to inherit over 20,000 depositors and 3,700 loan customers in the teachers-owned Spire Bank by November after signing a buyout deal last month.

Giving Equity a new foothold in the race for the teachers’ client base, as the purchase is set to make it home to over 100,000 teachers who will access its services across the country.

Mwalimu Sacco, owned by teachers acquired a 75 percent stake in the lender, which was then operating as Equatorial Commercial Bank in December 2014 and in 2020 the remaining 25 percent.

Hence Mwalimu Sacco the majority shareholder in Spire Bank, will pay Equity Sh1.7 billion to cover liabilities.

Based on Union’s first deputy general secretary, Tom Odero, the employees weren’t involved in the acquisition plans which is a huge mistake owing to the fact that some of them might be jobless upon the striking of a deal.

“It is quite clear that the lender is being acquired without stating the fate of the union members, which is a bad labour practice to ignore the employees,” he said.

  • Click on ‘Human interface devices’ that will be on the left side.
  • The driver folder should have a “normal” name involving “Samsung” in the name.

Coca-Cola Foundation Launches Women Empowerment Program

by Ndungu Brian October 17, 2022
written by Ndungu Brian

The Coca-Cola Foundation in partnership with Women in Africa (WIA), has flagged off the first cohort of 687 beneficiaries of its Jamii Femme program in Kenya.

WIA is the world’s international platform for the economic development and support of African women.

The female entrepreneurs are currently engaged in a year-long program being conducted by WIA’s knowledge partner, Honoris United Universities. The sessions which began in September 2022, will equip the women to take a principled approach to design creative ideas, and gain knowledge on leadership and managerial skills.

Upon completion of the 4-month online course, 60 entrepreneurs from the first cohort will be selected for a 2-week accelerator program and assigned coaches to mentor them.

In addition, the program has earmarked grants which will be awarded to these beneficiaries to further support business development thereby increasing their impact on communities.

Debra Mallowah, Vice President, of the East and Central Africa Franchise, “We are excited to roll out this new initiative as it will play a critical role in accelerating our focus on how we impact women and the communities that we operate in. We are particularly happy to have Kenya as one of the beneficiary countries in phase 1, as it will enable us to build on the previous milestones from our 5by20 program (empower 5 million women by 2020 worldwide) where we were able to economically empower up to 800,000 women in Kenya alone, and 2 million Africa-wide in 5 years. Women empowerment remains one of our key pillars in driving the sustainability agenda and we are keen to bring on board more initiatives that deliver the desired positive impact in the lives of women in Kenya and Africa.”

The program dubbed “JAMII Femmes” seeks innovative solutions to bring positive changes in Africa by improving the quality of life for thousands of people. Participants will receive support through online training, networking, mentorship, and local boot camps.

In its first year, the program aims to support women entrepreneurs based in 3 countries: Kenya, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria.

The program will be admitting its second cohort of women in January 2023. The application is open to women entrepreneurs from participating countries with businesses aligned with sustainable development goals. The initiative aims to impact 20,000 women entrepreneurs from 10 African countries over the next three years.
